Technical Notes

Changes in personal income and outlays for September

The September increase of $54.5 billion in personal income primarily reflected increases in compensation and government social benefits.

  • Within compensation, the increase was led by private wages and salaries based on U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) Current Employment Statistics (CES).
  • The increase in government social benefits was led by Medicare, based on data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the Budget of the U.S. Government.

Revisions to personal income

Estimates have been updated for July and August reflecting revised BLS CES data. The revision to personal interest income was led by monetary interest, based on newly available data from the U.S. Bureau of the Fiscal Service.
